Cryptococcosis
Description
Cryptococcus is a pathogenic yeast that causes opportunistic infection especially in the immunocompromised patient. It mainly infects the central nervous system and causes meningitis. Cryptococcal meningitis is responsible for over 600 000 deaths worldwide annually, especially in developing countries. Mortality rate reaches 70% in sub-Saharan Africa. Cryptococcal lung disease is also an important clinical outcome, leading to severe pneumonia with respiratory failure.
