Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease caused by Hepatitis C virus (HCV) belonging to the Flaviviridae family. HCV is a major cause of persistent liver disease, with approximately 170 million individuals infected worldwide. Up to 80% of patients will have chronic infection, causing degenerative liver disease including fibrosis and cirrhosis over 20 years after infection. Some of these patients will develop hepatocellular carcinoma. Chronic HCV infection is the leading indication for liver transplantation.
