The enzyme from mammalian brain forms the Nomega-monomethyl-, Nomega,Nomega-dimethyl- and Nomega,Nomega'-dimethyl-arginine derivatives. The name protein methylase I is misleading since it has been used for a number of enzymes with different specificities.
