Requires FeII. The enzyme from Alcaligenes sp. strain O-1 has also been shown to catalyse the reaction: 2,3-dihydroxybenzenesulfonate + O2 + H2O = 2-hydroxymuconate + bisulfite and has been referred to as 2,3-dihydroxybenzenesulfonate 2,3-dioxygenase. Further work will be necessary to show whether or not this is a distinct enzyme.
