This enzyme can oxidize a number of 1-pyrrolines, e.g.
3-hydroxy-1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate is converted into
4-hydroxyglutamate and (R)-1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate is converted
into D-glutamate. While NAD+ appears to be the better electron
acceptor, NADP+ can also act, but more slowly [1,3]. In many
organisms, ranging from bacteria to mammals, proline is oxidized to
glutamate in a two-step process involving this enzyme and EC
1.5.99.8, proline dehydrogenase [3]. In many bacterial species, both
activities are carried out by a single bifunctional enzyme [3,4]. |
