Entry
H00113                      Disease

Name
Salmonellosis
Description
Salmonellosis (non-typhoid) is an infectious disease caused by any serotype of bacteria in the genus Salmonella, other than Salmonella that causes typhoid and paratyphoid fever. Salmonellosis is one of the most frequently occurring food-borne diseases worldwide, usually acquired via the food chain. Foods prepared with contaminated raw eggs, egg products, and insufficiently heated poultry meat and pork have been identified as the primary sources of human Salmonella infections. Salmonellosis is characterized by the acute onset of fever, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhoea, and sometimes vomiting. The disease is usually self-limiting, lasting a few days. However, in some cases, more serious complications follow, especially in immunocompromised people, pregnant women, the elderly and children.
