HPV60 was originally isolated from a keratinous plantar cyst
composed of the wall of the squamous cell layer and the horny inner
substance in the lower dermis displaying cytoplasmic amorphous
eosinophilic inclusions and vacuolated structure with or without
pyknotic nuclei. These morphological changes are not characteristic
of skin lesions associated with other HPV types (1, 2, 3, 4, and
7). HPV 60 was found in three out of three other plantar cysts with
similar pathological changes; a fourth cyst without the associated
pathological changes as negative for HPV60. These results strongly
suggest that HPV 60 has unique biological properties which can
induce a plantar cyst. The HPV60 genome appeared to be in an
episomal form. HPV 60 showed no similarity with other known
prototypes (HPVs 1-59) by Southern blot analysis under stringent
conditions. Phylogenetically, it is associated with HPV 4, 48, 50,
and 65, a group of primarily cutaneous types.
