Dicrocoeliosis is a rare food-borne parasitic zoonosis caused by Dicrocoelium dendriticum, commonly known as the Lancet liver fluke. Human infection occurs by accidental ingestion of the second intermediate host.
Dicrocoelium dendriticum has a complex life cycle with two intermediate hosts: the land snail of the Helicella, Theba and Zebrina genera and ant mainly of the genus Formica.
